Installing Spotifast on macOS and Linux
Get Spotifast running on macOS (Gatekeeper approval) and Linux (distro packages or build from source).
Spotifast runs natively on macOS and Linux — no compatibility layers, no workarounds. Here's how to get it on each.
macOS install
Download the macOS build from spotifast.rocks/download. You'll get a disk image: open it and drag the Spotifast app into your Applications folder, the same as any Mac app.
On first launch, macOS Gatekeeper will likely complain that the app is from an unidentified developer. That's expected for indie open-source software. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the security section, and you'll see a prompt allowing Spotifast to open. Confirm it once and you're set permanently.
Log in with your Spotify Premium account and your library syncs in. The Mac build respects native conventions — it feels like a real Mac app, not a ported web page.
Linux install
Linux users get the most options, which also means the steps depend on your distro. The downloads page lists the available packages and build instructions. Common paths:
- Debian/Ubuntu and derivatives: install the .deb package with your package manager — it handles dependencies for you.
- Fedora/RHEL family: use the .rpm package.
- Arch and others: check the project's GitHub releases and community packaging — the build instructions there cover compiling from source with Cargo, Rust's package manager.
You'll need a Rust toolchain only if you're building from source; the prebuilt packages just install and run.
After installing
Launch Spotifast, log in through Spotify's official auth page, and let your library sync. Then try what makes the app special: switch themes, pop out the Winamp-style mini player, and turn on MilkDrop visuals while something plays — the themes and visuals guide walks through all of it.
Linux audio can occasionally need attention: if you get no sound, check that the right output device is selected in your system sound settings and in the app. The troubleshooting guide covers the usual Linux audio fixes. Windows user? Here's the Windows install walkthrough.
